Colleen Kay

LPC

Child Therapist

I know that change is a scary thing to face, but when you are dedicated to your own growth you are able to achieve things you never thought you could. I am here to truly help you every step of the way.

I am an eclectic therapist who uses a mix of CBT, ACT, Narrative therapy, and self-compassion, amongst other methods to help my clients identify and change self-defeating thoughts. I help my client’s separate their problems from their identities through using mindfulness, and challenging negative thinking patterns in order to build a healthier relationship with themselves.

I have five years of experience working with a wide variety of populations and settings. I have worked closely with children, adolescents, and young adults all looking for support to navigate life transitions and managing interpersonal relationships. I use active listening skills, along with psychoeducation to help my clients build the techniques needed to manage anxiety and depressive thoughts and symptoms. I strive to create a safe space for my client’s own self-growth and exploration. Through doing so, I have seen my client’s achieve a higher self-esteem and self-worth.

When I was a child, I struggled to find the words for how I was feeling. With tears and frustration I attempted to tell others how I felt. But the “funny” kid couldn’t possibly be depressed. It felt like no one understood how I was feeling. What’s worse is I didn’t know how to communicate what I needed. I cannot tell you how frustrated I was. When I was finally able to get the help I needed, I blossomed. I want to be that for my clients; I want to help them understand their own needs, emotions, strengths, and voice.

My path to becoming a therapist has been filled with both achievements and struggles. But by utilizing my support system I persevered and achieved goals that I never thought I could. Personally, I’ve experienced adversities that I always thought would keep me from living the life I wanted for myself. I realized what I needed was to face those adversities head on instead of hoping they would just go away on their own. Facing these personal hardships have prepared me for my professional path. Taking a women's studies class in my undergraduate program led me to pursuing my master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling. With this degree I have worked with a number of populations and settings, all of which have continued to strengthen my foundation as a therapist.

Fun Fact

I am a scary movie fan who hates being scared. Thursday nights are my nights to decompress by watching scary movies with my wife, my best friend, and my golden retriever, Louise.
